Adult Counseling
One-on-one counseling is provided for adults to address diet in relationship to health issues. Common reasons for nutrition counseling include the following:
- healthy eating and health maintenance
- weight concerns
- diabetes, pre-diabetes, and gestational diabetes
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol levels
- chronic kidney disease
- celiac disease
- stomach or intestinal problems
The initial session consists of diet assessment, diet counseling, meal planning and goal setting. One or two follow-up sessions can help patients evaluate dietary changes and problem-solve concerns and barriers to success. There is never an obligation to have follow-up appointments.
Child and Adolescent Counseling
Children may come to the office for many of the same health related reasons as adults. Other reasons that children might be seen include:
- weight concerns
- poor weight gain
- picky eating
- special needs
- food allergies
The approach with children is different than with adults. Care is given to make the child comfortable and a part of the discussion. A non-dieting approach is used to guide children and families to eat in such a way as to reach specific goals. Children rely on the adults in their lives to provide safe and healthy food choices as well as opportunities to play and be physically active. For this reason, an adult caregiver is usually present during the session.
Couple and Family Counseling
Couples counseling is beneficial when both people are ready to make changes in their own diets and want to support the other person’s efforts. Family counseling involves working with more than one child and the adults in the household to create a safe and healthy food environment for everyone. Individual plans are made for each person and common goals are set for the couple or family.
Health Insurance and Payments
Many insurance policies cover nutrition counseling but coverage varies. We will help you verify coverage and let you know before your appointment if there will be an out-of- pocket cost. We accept most major insurance companies such as Medicare, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Health Choice, and SoonerCare. We are not in network with Cigna or Tricare.
